How to apply for a new permit

If mailing your new application package, mail to:

You must complete and send in (or, hand-deliver the entire package) the NM DPS Application

  • NOTE: The document at that link is 41 pages long. If you download the entire document, the application information starts on Page 31. The actual application is located on Page 35 and 36. Be sure to use the checklist on Page 31. Also, note that the pages are not numbered.

  • Check off the "New License Application" box

  • A total of $100.00 fee

    • $44 for the Background Check (Fingerprints)​

    • The fee is $8.30 for Military/NM Mounted Patrol applicants

    • For non-military/non-NM MP applicants, you will pay $44 online for the fingerprints online when you sign up on the Gemalto fingerprint website.

    • The balance of $56 for the Application Fee

  • When you send (or bring) in your application and other materials, just send the balance of $56 by check, money order, cashier's check, etc

  • Make your check, money order, etc., payable to "New Mexico Department of Public Safety".

  • Include a photocopy of your New Mexico Driver’s License or New Mexico Identification Card

  • Include a photocopy of your birth certificate *

  • Include a printout of my Certificate of Completion of Firearms Training

  • Be sure to include the two release forms (pages 3 and 4 of the application).

    • One requires notarization and the other must be witnessed.

    • "SOC" on the form that needs to be notarized means they want your Social Security Number.

  • Electronic Fingerprints

    • Send a copy of your paid Gemalto receipt with your application and other materials

* If your New Mexico driver's license is the "Real ID" version, you do not have to send birth certificate information
