How to select a Concealed Carry Firearms Instructor
Once you decide you'd like to take the training required prior to
applying for a New Mexico Concealed Carry permit, selecting an
instructor is probably next on your list.

There are a few things you may want to consider in your selection
process...

Speak to the instructor you are considering. Get detailed information
about:

Background and Additional Training - Consider if the instructor has
both formal firearms training and practical law enforcement or military
experience to build on that training. Having that practical experience in
addition to formal training is often more beneficial to students.

Liability Insurance - While the new law does not require the instructor
to carry liability insurance as protection for students engaged in
firearms instruction, responsible and professional instructors will obtain
such insurance anyway. Ask to see valid certification of coverage.
Minimum coverage should be at least one million dollars.

Class Size - Ask about the instructor's class size. Concealed carry
information and training is critical to your success in prevailing in a
potentially deadly confrontation. Large classes may not provide the
most positive learning experience that you need. Smaller classes (10 to
12 persons maximum) are more conducive to effective learning, positive
student interaction, personal attention to your questions, and are
generally more safe.

Instructional Materials - Ask the instructor if his/her instructional
materials are available for review prior to taking the class. Consider if
the material reflects the care, professionalism, dedication and effort
associated with quality instruction.

Information and Communication - Ask if the instructor is able to
provide additional information and communication about his or her
ongoing instructional efforts. These days, it seems having a
professional website is a great way for an instructor to accomplish this
kind of communication, so you might ask if a website is available to
view.

References - Ask the instructor if you can speak with someone who has
taken his or her class before. Keep in mind that former students may
be very private regarding the disclosure that they are concealed carry
holders, but, the instructor may find some who is willing to speak to
you about the class. Additionally, the instructor's website may have a
"Student Comments" or "Feedback" page where former students'
comments may be posted.

Personalized Instruction - Ask the instructor if additional services are
offered such as personalized instruction. Some students may desire
one-on-one instruction either before or following formal
classroom-oriented concealed carry instruction.

The "Long Haul" - Ask if the instructor intends to be involved in
concealed carry instructor activities on a limited basis or over an
extended period of time. You may want to consider someone who is
committed to providing concealed carry instructional excellence to the
citizens of New Mexico as long as they are able and not just on a
short-term basis.

These are just a few of the items you may consider when selecting a
concealed carry instructor. New Mexicans are invited to contact me any
time to ask about these subjects or any others about concealed carry in
New Mexico.
